Based on photographs taken in the artist’s garden, this lovely oil on canvas painting by palette knife artist James Dick depicts a showdown between two female broad-billed hummingbirds competing for sugar water. Hummingbirds consume up to eight times their body weight in sugar water per day and are the only birds that can fly backward. The painting beautifully captures their blurry, rapidly moving wings as they hover above red canna lilies.
